Brunching at American Son

Eaton Hotel located in downtown D.C. on K Street made a big splash in DC’s hospitality scene when they opened last year. Simply put, their mission statement is to be environmentally friendly, by using sustainable food and organic materials, which is not a novelty idea, but Eaton does a great job of translating that into their business operation. The hotel smartly makes use of the space and provide a ton of options for anyone looking to explore. Some of those options are a restaurant, a rooftop bar with live music, a coffee shop, a wellness center, and a speakeasy bar. I finally got the opportunity to check out American Son, which is the resident restaurant for the hotel a couple of weekends ago for brunch and I must say that I liked what I saw.

Parking: I will say one downside to going to Eaton is the parking situation. I went on a Sunday at around 12 pm, and after circling the area a couple of times, I was unable to find any street parking. Eventually, I gave up trying to find parking and valet my car. Valet was quite pricey at $ 23, so it wasn't ideal, but I did see some parking garages in my hunt to find parking, so that’s also an option.

Ambiance: The space was slightly underwhelming ambiance wise, and I think more effort was made into transforming the coffee shop (Kintsugi ) and the rooftop bar ( Wild Days, which resembles a garden oasis. The restaurant is very open, with an indoor-outdoor concept. The openness draws your attention to the many potted and hanging plants covering the space, which translate well with the environment-friendly concept.

Food: As stated earlier I went for brunch and as my luck would have it they were out of French Toast, which was very disappointing. I ended up getting the Pork Belly Hash, which is $18. The hash was tasty and visually appealing, but the portion size was very small, which was odd since it was one of their more expensive brunch items. My friend got the fried chicken sandwich, which was huge and ironically cheaper at $14. The sandwich was good, and I would recommend ordering it especially if you are looking for something filling. They don't have a drinks deal , which makes their drinks on the pricier side for brunch, but they were good and pretty, to say the least.

After we ate we explored the coffee shop and the rooftop bar, both of which are successfully executed. Would I come back for brunch? Probably not, but I can't wait to visit again for Happy Hour or a late night drink once it gets warmer.
